The WP7 marketplace begets more board game goodness with Volcano Island. The premise is simple. Get the trapped inhabitants of the island onto rescue ships. With lifeboats and helicopters to help you along the way getting the passengers still is not a simple task because octopuses and sharks are waiting to devour the survivors. Volcano Island is a simple turn by turn based board game. Each of your turns has a specific number of spaces that you can move. Once you’ve used up all of your moves in a specific turn, it’s the turn of the octopus and sharks to move. Sharks and octopuses can only move one space per turn.

The purpose of the moves is to get all of the refugees from the island onto the rescue ships. The challenge is that some of the refugees can’t swim without the assistance of someone else. They are indicated by a life-ring over the top of their head, so make sure you get someone that can swim in the water along with them.

As the levels in the game develop there are different things to help, and challenge, you along the way. Helping you is the addition of lifeboats and helicopters to transport people onto the rescue ships. However, lifeboats are vulnerable to octopuses but are impervious to sharks, but can be useful in transporting those non-swimmers and cats to the rescue craft. Lifeboats can only carry two people at a time while helicopters can carry four. Along with the sharks and octopuses, you have a set number of ‘life allowances.’ If too many people die in a specific level, then it’s all over but if you have extra life allowances they rollover to the next level.

Overall, Volcano Island is a simple game with a simple purpose and graphics. While the controls are easy and intuitive I do feel that the game lacks some lasting value. It’s not a game that I look forward to sitting down and playing all the time. I’m more partial to guns and explosions or a good puzzle game. For all you strategists out there however, make sure you don’t miss out on Volcano Island.
