Alright, so it may have a title which sounds like it was created using the Generic Fantasy Game Name Generator™. It may have characters and enemies which look like they’ve fallen out of Poser’s templates without so much as a touch up. It may appear to be little more than a lazy copy of Diablo’s gameplay… well, alright, it is little more than a lazy copy of Diablo’s gameplay. But aside from all that, it’s, well, it’s free. And a lazy clone of Diablo. Which means it at least inherits some of that game’s compulsive elements. Namely the urge to level up further and collect more loot.
A shame it loses all the nuance that makes the Diablo series special. Admittedly, matching up to Blizzard’s huge, dedicated teams and budgets was never going to be on the cards, not in a small, free effort like this. But even so, this is a game of overwhelming simplicity. It has no storyline to speak of, no world to care about. Even Diablo’s simpler predecessors, from Rogue and on, place you as a lone adventure, questing into a dungeon in pursuit of treasure and glory. In Legends of Descent, you’re a dwarf stranded in a dungeon, wandering through it aimlessly. A dungeon which inexplicably features unmolested shopkeepers and blacksmiths at every level.
Moreover, you’re a dwarf with no particular specialisation, and only limited levelling options – don’t expect to craft a unique, distinct character here. You can vaguely direct your progress, but the effects are minimal – don’t expect anywhere near the diversity of even early evolutions of the Rogue formula, nothing to match Nethack’s design. It also misses another crucial element which made these games worthwhile – something which Diablo passed over in favour of greater polish. I’m talking about variety and challenge. Rogue and its descendants are all greatly challenging games, where allowing yourself to get ganged up on at any stage in the game is a recipe for disaster. Meanwhile, their dungeons – though rendered incredibly simplistically in terms of graphics – are filled with surprises and dangers – mysterious potions and powerful djinnis, traps and curses – all sorts of things to catch the unwary adventurer.
Legends of Descent, meanwhile, takes Diablo’s approach: waves of easy-to-kill enemies dropping tons of loot and useful objects, mobbing you constantly and barely reducing your health. Only it does so minus Diablo’s polish, its plot, its customisation. Adding basic graphics may be an improvement on the old ASCII set, but they don’t make up for the lack of everything else. In short, this is a game which takes the least important parts of both Nethack and Diablo, ignores what makes them great, and puts them together. It’s a bit of a mess.
Which isn’t to say it gets everything wrong. The controls, for one thing, are nicely thought out. Though the menus can be a bit of a chore to browse, the act of wandering the dungeon bashing monsters is pleasingly simple: tap to move, hold a button and tap to swipe. Though, inexplicably, this button is only in one corner of the screen, making you hold it with your **** hand and have your **** do all the work. Why it wasn’t added to both sides of the screen, particularly when played in horizontal alignment, I do not know.
Still, it’s a simple, effective way of transferring Diablo’s control system, and is supported by a wonderfully simple method of potion use: rather than having you deal with a fiddly list of potions to deal with mid-battle, it just asks that you tap on the related bar to refill it with the most suitable potion – tap on your health bar to quaff a healing potion, and on the mana bar to drink, well, a mana potion.
And that’s not all. While customising your character through level ups may be a little underwhelming, the game allows for equipment-based customisation. Though hardly rare to see in other RPGs, the system of having a range of armour and equipment which allows for contrasting benefits and downsides is an effective one – forcing you to decide between magic-restricting but heavy armour, or sacrificing defence for lighter, mana-boosting clothing; between swords and hammers, bows and staffs.
If only the game gave you a reason to branch out. The lack of esoteric abilities – no sneaking, no lockpicking – or versatile magic, plus the incredibly easy to defeat mobs of enemies, there’s never any reason to branch out beyond equipping your best sword and caving in monsters’ skulls. We’re back to the same problem we already mentioned – that this is just too simple a game. While it offers you loot and experience, the lack of thought required when deciding your approach – in levelling and in equipment – means that neither is particularly satisfying, and that there’s little to keep you playing beyond the very simple process of watching numbers increase.
Still, for some people that will be enough. I appreciate that not everybody wants to be engaged – for some people, simple compulsion is all they’re looking for, and for these people this will be a welcome gift. For everyone else – well, we can hope that the developer will continue to add features to the game, and gradually turn this into a more worthy imitator of Diablo and Rogue. Either way, the game is completely free, and available on the Marketplace now.

The reviewer for this title Yann ( or wiper as you might know him ) is usually quick to reply to the comments , but he is with out internet connection for the past week . Once he gets it back I would assume he would go through this and get back to you guys on your comments .
First this is a Alpha Version of the game and calling it average is not in one bit correct. I have played Diablo heavily and also off late LOD. There are similarities between them and I also agree to a extent that it include a better storyline but going beyond that is not fair.
The game has improved a lot from the first release and even though I am not a active member on the forums, I do visit them and I see that the Devs are very interested in what everybody has to say and try to package the best of feedback/bugs in upcoming releases. They are also open to feedback as can be seen from the comments below. LOD has come a major way and there is no comparable RPG game for WP7 which can hook you for as long as LOD does.
I would request you to play LOD once again with your mind open and probably then we can expect a more open and fair review
Greetings,
I have experienced almost every single game that is/was available in Marketplace. the first time i played LoD it was an Alpha release just like the one of this review. The first thing i saw was that this was a game that had a lot of potencial if the Devs improved it. I can say that i played Diablo and this game is near the same kind. Recently i installed it again and for my suprise the game had a lot of major improvments.
Now we can choose 3 difrent class, there are avilable a bucnh of difrent spells for each class, the weapons are a lot better as also the armor. The enemys may be the same after few levels, but there 8/9 kind of enemys. Boss, big moobs of enemys, there are all kind of tatics you can apply on this game to kill them.
I have visited theyr Forum and i must say that there is a lot of discussion there and the Devs really are in to it. I am waiting for the further updates of this game, but at this point it is the best one i have played untl now in RPG mode. The Dungeon Stalker/Sword of rapier or even dragon’s balde are diffrent and can´t be compared with this.
I must agree with the comments made here. Your review is very poorly made and for what i see you don´t know anything about a real RPG game. If you make your reviews of free games like this one you should not review it, becouse you don´t have any understanding off it
PS: I only tested free games, it´s true, but once again you are forgetting in your review that this game doesn´t come from “the favorites” company MICROSOFT. It´s a well made/developed game by a bunch of guys that are doing a great job with limite resources. Next time be more humble before you make a review.
Has a new user of a WindowsPhone i must say that playing games on this kind of toys is new for me. but for the most FREE games that are around for this kind of phones LoD is amazing. I know most of players of big RPGS will be writing that this game is limited, but it is under a major development. This may seem a game that doesn´t bring anything new to the present days. But if you really play it like you play other games you will have a lot of fun. The level up skills, the armor, the enchanting the blacksmith is really awsome for me. And most of all the developers aren´t a Huge Company there aren´t 20 people developing this game and above all its FREE. This game has already gone around the world and has been updated time to time, again without any $$$ asked. Also they have a good forum with a bunch of guys that know what they speak. And one thing that lacks in thoose call MAJOR COMPANIES, is that the developers people that speak with us us and are there to take our opinions about the game, to make it better in every update.
I have cheked other RPG games in marketplace and they can´t touch, even in a ligther way this game.
It may be a suprise for the ones that play the game, to have so many abilities available, wich in other games woldn´t be there unless you pay for it. Up until now i have reached a long way in the game and i ain´t tired or anoyed with anything. the game pulls you in to it the more and more you play to the point where you are playing to see wich weapons will appear better than yours, how many enemys you can kill in a shoot, how many boss you can go against at the same time, etc etc.
For me this is the best game i have played in my Smartphone. There are others, but not RPG, and even thoose need a more develop than this.
And the review that was made….well i must say you haven´t played the game as it is now, or you don´t know how to build a real player. and you forget that all new games have bugs, but with most it takes 4/5 months to solve and in this game it takes 2/5 days to get a patch. Don´t forget about that
For me this is the best game for Windowsphone. No doubts about it.
Once again the lack of mention of Alpha in the written review is appalling. This game is under heavy development and changes massively with every update and as such I don’t think this game is for everyone just yet. But with that said, your review doesn’t seem to take any of that into consideration and instead is bashed for being a bad Diablo “copy”. Which is odd as you seem to have something against Diablo.
You seem to have no problem laying into this “pointless” game but when it comes to a “pointless” clone (Dungeon Stalker) of a game that you obviously played as a small child then you recommend it hands down despite the fact that it is just as “pointless”.
Then there is the whole missed topic of the forums. You really should do some research when reviewing Indie games. The devs are very helpfully and have listened a lot to what the fans have had to say. As a small team coming up with new ideas and specifics must be a nightmare. This is were crowd sourcing wins. Why many reviewers neglect this is beyond me.
For me this game has huge potential, I can’t wait to see how it ends up and love being a part of helping create what it is. Hopefully you will do a less subjective review when LoD is out of alpha.
OK this is a very unfair review, the community on the forum is very strong, The Devs are nice / active, they listnen fairly to everyones ideas and the other users know there rpg elements so discussions can get very interesting. the game is now up to 0.3.5 Alpha,
theres now about 20 skills able to level up to 6,
Fetch/ kill x mobs quest system,
Champion monster and now a boss, New Mobs,
and your choice of Class, Mage, Warrior, Rogue,
and how much depth do you want? I play my phone on my way to work/smoke breaks, i want to game not read, I play gurps/ dev my own games for that. oh yeah Multiplayer will be a viable option in the new future as will more story,
so lets so see: constantly growing game = more free content, chance to input new feature/ bug reports = dont know how make games and get your ideas in one = FTW, as bob said this game is in the alpha stage when its done it will raep, http://www.legendsofdescent.com
Wow. I hate to say it but this review was really inaccurate in my opinion. First, you should make it more clear to everyone that this is an alpha review and the game is not released yet. I’ve been an alpha tester for a long time and the dev has been great about adding features, including a lot of the things you complain about in your review (especially character and magic customizations). I didn’t watch the video but the pictures look like they are from an older version of the game as well. Anyway I agree with your perception of LoD as a hack ‘n slash knockoff, especially a couple of versions ago, but I have spent more time playing this game than every other game on my phone combined. It may be redundant but it’s fun until you max out your character :) A little tweaking and I think it’ll be a real winner.
Hey Guys, I am an LoD dev and I just thought I would drop a comment to say thanks for the review! I really enjoyed reading through it, especially how you pointed out the ridiculousness of the merchants just sitting around randomly in the dungeon :-). Also, I appreciated your critical feedback about what the game lacks, and it will help to steer the content that we will be adding in the future. As mentioned in your video, the game is still in alpha and so it still has quite a ways to go before our vision for it is complete. The next major release is going to include a plotline and a town to hold all of those lost merchants, which I think will address a lot of your desires for the game. All in all, thanks a lot for the review, I would love to have you guys come back and review it again once it is closer to v1!
For any of your readers that are interested in suggesting new features for the game, just jump in on our forums and let us know what you want to see. We have implemented LOTS of features suggested by our fans on our forums! You can get to the forums here… legendsofdescent.com
It’s always good to see the developers taking active interest in what the community thinks about their games . I will be sending you an email shortly. :)
And we would definitely consider a review once it hits v1
Best Game on Windows Phone .. EVER !!!!!!
