Yet another game designed to embarrass the games reviewer in public. Perhaps things are different in other parts of the world, but on public transport in Britain any behaviour more exciting than sitting quietly with a newspaper is quietly frowned upon. Holding an electronic device aloft and proceeding to swerve right and left is therefore right out. And don’t try to explain your actions away by informing nearby passengers that you’re actually playing this game because you have to review it – aside from committing the grave social faux pas of actually talking to a fellow commuter, the revelation that you actually review games for a living is liable to elicit a reaction more commonly reserved for people casually announcing that they molest children in their spare time.

But we toil on – it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. And perhaps I didn’t really need to be playing Jet Car Stunts WP at that precise moment. Perhaps – whisper it – I actually wanted to play it. Because the thing about Jet Cart Stunts is that it’s a really bloody good game.

Previously released on iPhone and Android, this is a solid port – perfectly smooth performance, well calibrated, and not prone to fits of unplayable stuttering should the player deign to receive a text message while playing. More importantly, the game itself is wonderfully executed, great fun to play, and filled to the brim with content.

The game is split into three types of level – time trials, platforming and ‘freestyle’. The first is self-explanatory – get to the end of the stage within a time limit. So far, so ordinary. The platforming tracks, meanwhile, feature no time limit at all, tasking the player with completing the stage without falling off the track or destroying their car – easier said than done. And finally the freestyle tracks are actually stunt tracks, having the player try and earn points by performing and stringing various tricks together – from flips and twists to wall-runs and grinds. This last mode will be familiar to fans of the old Rush series, and proves surprisingly addictive, requiring clever manipulation of your jet car to succeed.

And it’s in said manipulations that the game really shines. As you might expect, the game is controlled using a combination of tilt and button controls: tilting to steer, and using buttons to accelerate and brake. Only, you also have access to your afterburner, or boost. So far, so generic – until you realise just how crucial the boost and brakes are to controlling your vehicle in the air. You see, while boost is engaged, it’s possible to have limited control of your direction in flight, controlling the pitch and roll of your car. Only, once your car has begun to spin it can be difficult to stop it, necessitating the use of your air brakes to bring an end to its corkscrew dive. The art of the game comes in learning to control your car both on the ground and in the air, learning to judge the speed and angle of attack you’ll need to reach the next platform safely, and to navigate any obstacles mid-jump. When you get it right, it’s exhilarating, and when you get it wrong – well, it just makes you want to try again.

All of this, combined with the generous dose of levels (over 70 tracks) and achievements which are actually a challenge to earn, makes for a game more than worth the asking price. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a pretty game, either – it may not be graphically stunning, but the minimalist application of clean, vibrant colours makes for an attractive game, and for tracks that are easy to read – important in a game with so much reliance on player judgement.

In short, this is one of those rare games that I’m happy to recommend without reservation. Great fun and great value – just try not to annoy your fellow passengers too much when playing it on the go!

I've been gaming since I first played Chess on the Amstrad PCW, and have never looked back. The advent of smartphones has given rise to an exciting new world of possibilities for gaming, and I've been particularly enamoured with Windows Phone 7 thanks to its integration with Xbox Live, and the minimum specifications Microsoft had for the handsets meaning that all of them are capable gaming devices. Also, because the OS is just so damned sexy. When I'm not playing or reviewing games, I have a variety of other interests and hobbies, not least ancient literature and history, subjects in which I hold both a bachelor and master of arts; so if you've any questions about which of the ancient Greek novels is the best,* you know who to ask! *Lucian's True History
