8 bit fans rejoice! Hypership: Out of Control brings the look and feel of the 8 bit era to WP7. Classic feeling and gameplay make this game enjoyable to play but there’s just a thing or two holding it back.

First of all the look of the game is fantastic. It really brings the look of an 8 bit style game to WP7. The gameplay has the feel of Galaga or to a lesser extent Space Invaders but combines elements from a game like Falldown. The object of the game is to see how far through different waves you can get your ship to go. Gameplay has a couple of different options, Easy, Medium, Hard etc. Not to mention there is an option to change the background to ‘fun’ mode. One of the other nice touches of the game is that it does include what the developers have dubbed ‘awardments’, and as opposed to other non-Xbox Live titles the list of ‘awardments’ is rather extensive.

Controls of the game are based on touch. Your corresponding touch guides your ships through the different obstacles that range from various space debris like asteroids, to more sophisticated and stationary blocks. To guide you along the way you have a laser and bombs that let you destroy some of the objects in your way.

Now for the bad news, the game does suffer from the controls. At times I found them jumpy and sometimes a little cumbersome. There were deaths that I had in the game that I felt were the result of a lack of responsive controls. Hopefully this will be resolved in updates of the game in the near future. If they are I feel the game would rate much higher. Ultimately it’s a game that has a lot of potential and I believe that it can be one of the best titles in the marketplace with a little bit of tinkering.

Update 24/05/11 : The devs have informed us they have addressed the control concerns with a 1.5 update which as been approved and should be available soon (if not already) on the Marketplace. The dev has also put a paid version of Hypership into approval. The price is set at $1.99 and it removes the ads from the game. Its expected to be available for purchase later this week.
