We are not new to hangman inspired windows phone games but when such a game offers turn by turn multi-player it certainly piqued our interest. Chances are some of you still remember this paper-and-pencil version which will test your vocabulary along with your opponent’s. Here is a quick crash course to jog your memory in case its a bit rust on the game mechanics : The word to guess is represented by a row of dashes, giving the number of letters in the word 5 blanks represents a five-letter word 7 blanks and it’s an seven-lettered word. One player sets this the other one has to guess the word one letter at a time , each time this payer makes a correct guess the other player fills in the blanks and if its an incorrect guess they draw one element of the hangman diagram. The game is over when one player guesses the word or the other completes the hangman diagram.

There are variations for each Hangman inspired game some offers a category to choose the word from while others don’t Get High with Words falls in to the latter. It also takes a much more kids friendly approach by offering a hot air balloon instead of the gallows. There are other differences too which we will look at along the way.

Get High with Words requires you to create an account when you first join the game, its a simple enough process and you are in. Along with the multi-player element the game also has a single player against the AI mode. In multiplayer mode you can send an invite ( using username ) to another player if it’s an non existing user you get a message which says just that.. you could also try inviting yourself to a game, i will let you figure out what that does or just pick a random opponent and go with that. Now you are presented with 12 random alphabets and you can create a word and submit it for the other player to guess , it has to be a minimum of 4 character long and a max of 8. You can shuffle the characters around to see if it sparks an idea for a new word. If you cant figure out anything with the given set of characters you can swap them for a new set by buying one of the in game bonuses which will cost you the in game credits which you accumulate over time by setting words and winning. With the words itself you earn more credits if you set complex words using characters that offer more points, eg if you used Q it give you 10 points for that character while an E or an A will only get you one credit. All characters are marked with the points they represent but the game will only tell you the points you earn after you submit the word ( if the word is valid , else you get to try again ) .. My feature request here would be the game shows you the points for before submitting them ( now you have to add it in your head ).

You can also start a chat session here and the message goes up as a toast notification / tile notification ( which is configurable from settings ) .. not a biggie but landscape support was missed especially while I was typing away a chat message. When all that is done and you submit a word you wait for the other player to guess that word , then they set a word for you to guess and you get a notification to do that. Here you are presented with a series of ? which represent the length of the word and you have the alphabets from A-Z, you can pick one by clicking on it. If that is present in the word that was set for you it shows up in the relevant location else you get a strike , 8 strikes and you lose that turn , lose 3 turns and you lose the game. You can buy bonuses here as well one bonus available here is the ability to remove strikes.

The game offers you a history of all the games you played the words that were used in them makes as correctly guessed or not. Clicking on those words even pulls up info about those words from dictionary.com ( get their windows phone app ). On to leaderboards the game offers the usual weekly , monthy and overall learboard for both multiplayer and solo games along with a missions page which allows you to unlock various custom balloons you can use in game for completing certains tasks like completing 10 solo challenges or finishing an online game with no strikes, etc . You can even purchase custom balloons usig your in game points from the settings page.

I have come across a small bug in solo play and have informed the devs of this and they have got back to saying it will be looked in to in the next update. A few other recomendations I have are the landscape mode at least in the chat window. Updating the facebook page to the touch version. Show the user on the loaderboard in a fixed location so he/she dont have to scroll all the way to find where they have positioned themselves. A redesign of the buttons used in the main menu some of them looks like they have are inactive ( see the settings and logout button ).

The developer have informed us a Windows 8 version planned for development to be released on release day of Windows 8, along with a Windows 8 version of Wheel of Wealth. The Windows 8 versions will be cross compatible and will allow a player to start playing on the phone, and then move to the pc/tablet and continue their game under the same account which means more cross platform games !!

Over all the game is really fun and there seems to be a lot of players on there and if you are in to word puzzle games don’t miss this one its will be well worth the download and for the price of 0.00, I don’t think many of you would require the extra push to try it out.
