Galaxium is a new vertical scrolling shooter for Windows Phone from Karios Games the guys behind the very popular platform jumper MonsterUp which we reviewed a while back. Will Galaxium be another game that will impress us ? read on to find out

From a visually point of view Galaxium is quite nice. When you launch the game you have a few settings and the option to go through a text based tutorial , was never a big fan of those and hope to see game with more interactive or at the very least a picture based tutorial. The settings page offers all the basic settings toggle options for music, SFX, haptic feedback, hints and leaderboard ( powered by VortexLink ). Here you will also find that you have 2 modes of control for the game

Tilt : using the accelerometer, there is no sensitivity setting here ( but that is probably coz you the option to choose 3 ships each with a different speed and having a sensitivity setting would defeat that purpose)
Touch : you just need to touch and drag / tap on desired location to move.

There is a storyline to it which goes something like ” aliens are invading Earth and you are Earth’s last hope ” but the cut-scene at the start of each wave does not really add any new element to that story which was a bit of a disappointment. The gameplay is the all too familiar never ending wave of enemies that you have to shoot your way through. But Galaxium does offer a boss fight at the end of each wave to make things a bit more entertaining and this add a nice touch to the game. As expected Karios Games delivers excellent graphics for the game and the tiny little thing like the moving background and explosion effects makes the game a lot more interesting than a simple vertical scrolling shooter. One other thing that you will notice is that when you gain the powerorbs you have the choice to save it to use it for a different upgrade and while I am not a biggest fan of that new upgrade system it was something different and will force you to strategize a bit before going all out on weapons upgrade.

You will also notice that the enemies vary in size , shape and attack pattern and this helps to keep the game a bit more interesting over longer periods of play. The enemies comes in the form of alien space-craft and asteroid and some of them will even shoot back at you. This brings us to one issue I have with the game the enemy projectiles are hard to see at times especially when there are too many thing going on and can be a bit frustrating but the major issue I have with Galaxium is that you can’t save your progress so each time you quit you have to start from the beginning :(

So to sum it up , Galaxium offers a nice vertical shooter only to be let down by the inability to save the progress in a game. The game is available for $0.99 with no trial but there is a totally free version of the game ( no feature limitation , other than the ads which might take up a bit of screen real-estate ) and so there is no reason why you should’t have Galaxium in your games collection.

Thanx for the review! As you may be aware, from our MonsterUp development cycles (already in v 1.10), we are into the habit of adding lots of stuff, and fix even more, in free updates for our games. The same will apply to Galaxium, so prepare to see all the things you wanted, and many more, in future updates. The review was for v. 1.3 anyway :)
