Would you like to play a game which requires no thought at all? Then do we have some good news for you! Farm Frenzy 2 joins the proud ranks of the games that Cow Clicker famously mocked, the genre of mindless click-fests. Or, in this case, a tap-fest.
Tap on an egg. Tap on another egg. Tap on the ground. Tap on a building. Tap on a bear repeatedly. Tap on your warehouse. Wait for something to happen. Tap on an egg… okay, so an awful lot of games can seem absurdly simple when described purely by their mechanics, with the average strategy game amounting to little more than “click on a man. Click on another man. And another man”, and so on. But most at least have the decency to actual involve a modicum of thought and consideration before each action.
Not so Farm Frenzy 2, which never evolves beyond having you respond to onscreen stimuli with simple, Pavlovian responses: “the game gives me points if I tap on the eggs so I will tap on the eggs”. It is taking a design abused by Facebook games, only minus the requirement for micro-payments: it at least has the decency to have you unlock everything you need through in-game actions.
It’s just a shame that those actions are, as already mentioned, incredibly simplistic. The game doesn’t even reward you with an expanding farm to enjoy as a reward, instead employing a Super Mario 3 style hub of farm, er, streets to expand down, unlocking new levels as you go. So you gradually get to tap on different types of animal and foodstuff. Animals and foodstuffs which don’t even have the decency to be particularly pretty, meaning the ‘rewards’ are particularly meagre. Great stuff.
And the tapping doesn’t even work that well. In order to add object to a processing building, you must tap on it. In order to upgrade a processing building, you must tap on it. It’s far too easy to accidentally drain your coffers upgrading a building when you only wanted to add produce to it – even worse if the ‘upgrade’ happens to be one which replaces the building with an entirely different kind, as is the case in certain levels, leaving you with both wasted money and no ability to transform your produce any longer, generally requiring a restart to fix.
How this ended up becoming an Xbox Live title I do not know. For a significant price of entry you are given a game which offers no thought, no satisfaction, and not even particularly high production values. There are far better games to spend your money on. Hell, there are far better games to not spend your money on. Avoid.

every week I buy one game that is always an xbox live game , this was a bit of a disappointment
Aye, there’s a reason I was so down on the game in my review, and it’s because of its label – as an Xbox Live title I’d expect this to be of a somewhat higher standard; quite the disappointment. Still, Microsoft made up for it somewhat with last week’s free release.
True, gotta love free games :) will there be a review for it ?
Yep, it should be on the site shortly!
You’re right to a pint. But if you try to earn the silver or gold medals (beat the clock), you have strategize in the most efficient route. I have found one gold medal impossible to get so far.
