Breeze Windows Phone

Breeze Windows Phone

A game about guiding a flower through levels using the wind/tilt controls. That’ll sound familiar to any fans of the (wonderful) PSN title Flower, but this is a very different beast. Breeze is, essentially, an inertia-driven obstacle course; a reskinned marble run.

The aim is simple – get your flower from its start to the finish line, possibly picking up a set number of glowing orbs along the way. You do this using one of two control methods – tilt controls (which work, as already mentioned, exactly like a marble run), or using a touch-induced breeze. The latter deserves further explanation, as it’s implemented in an interesting way. Rather than using a virtual stick or similar, the game simply causes a breeze to be generated, blowing in the direction of the flower, from wherever you place your finger; so placing your finger to the left of the flower will cause it to be blown right, and so on. This system also means that the closer your finger to the flower, the faster it moves, as the breeze has less chance to dissipate; the downside being that the closer to the flower you are, the harder to make subtle movements and direct it accurately.

As the game is designed as an obstacle course, both control systems work well – it’s only a shame that while both operate separately (with progress using one method not contributing to progress with the other), they have exactly the same set of levels, so there’s little incentive to complete both modes. There are also a few quirks with the touch controls – having the a sometimes essential airbrake be activated by a button at the top-right of the screen can make using it while controlling your flower more fiddly than it should be, and having to press right against the flower in order to move at full speed can make directing it accurately a little too awkward at times, but these are minor issues, and completely avoidable if you’re happy with tilt controls.

Other than that, this is a capable, if not particularly inspiring, little game. With 60 levels to complete it will last you a while, and with each level being over in under a minute it’s perfect for gaming on the go. The game may not look special, and the music could be a little more subtle, but neither graphics nor sound are offensively bad. In short, it’s an unremarkable but pleasant title – one which is elevated to a recommended download by the simple fact that it’s completely free. What have you got to lose?

I've been gaming since I first played Chess on the Amstrad PCW, and have never looked back. The advent of smartphones has given rise to an exciting new world of possibilities for gaming, and I've been particularly enamoured with Windows Phone 7 thanks to its integration with Xbox Live, and the minimum specifications Microsoft had for the handsets meaning that all of them are capable gaming devices. Also, because the OS is just so damned sexy. When I'm not playing or reviewing games, I have a variety of other interests and hobbies, not least ancient literature and history, subjects in which I hold both a bachelor and master of arts; so if you've any questions about which of the ancient Greek novels is the best,* you know who to ask! *Lucian's True History
