Box Rush Windows Phone

Today has been a good week for self-explanatory physics-based puzzlers, it seems. First we were stacking monsters, now we’re rushing boxes across a screen. Whereas in Monster Stack the aim was to stop the monsters falling past the bottom of the screen, in Box Rush the aim is to prevent your odd assortment of shapes from touching the floor at all.

Each level starts with a set assortment of shapes to be taken and stacked upon your trolley in whatever order and arrangement you see fit, before taking control of said trolley and, well, rushing it to the end of the course. Which generally means holding a digit against the right hand side of the screen for a while, causing your trolley and its contents to hurtle rightwards towards the finish line. Complicating things are the occasional obstacles – bumps in the road, which will cause your stacked objects to rattle and swerve as your trolley passes them. It’s generally wise to release the accelerator before coming to these hazards, as at full pelt you’re liable to find your boxes launching skywards – but it’s equally important not to brake too hard, as doing so will just as surely see the contents of your cart carry on, loaded with inertia, and slip to the floor.

All of this is easy to understand, and makes for a fun enough mechanic – indeed, you’ll quickly find yourself intentionally braking every so often in order to shuffle wayward boxes towards the front of your trolley, or hitting bumps while accelerating in the hope of clawing them back towards the rear. It’s very simple, but fun enough.

Where the game falls down is in the opening section of each level, the placing of shapes. Positioning your boxes well is crucial to your success, with a misplaced triangle able to bring about disaster, leaving your stack of boxes structurally unsound. As such, being able to see what you’re doing is rather important – which makes the game’s decision to hold any object you pick up directly under your finger, obscuring it entirely from view, a baffling one. Far too often you’ll find yourself with boxes slightly out of place because of the perspective, and stacking the boxes swiftly becomes a frustrating experience.

This is a short game, but the frustration builds up quickly, potentially killing the urge to carry on until the end. It’s a shame, as the game is otherwise nice enough – not exactly groundbreaking, but entertaining in the way that playing with simple shapes and physics engines tends to be, tuning into that tiny part of our brain that enjoyed playing with them as a child. Still, should the developers adjust the stacking system – perhaps having the boxes appear slightly above your finger, as with Monster Stack (and a variety of other games) – then this would be a considerably more pleasurable experience. And, for what it’s worth, it’s available for free as an ad-supported title, allowing you to get a feel for the game before deciding whether to shell out for the 79p, ad-free version.

I've been gaming since I first played Chess on the Amstrad PCW, and have never looked back. The advent of smartphones has given rise to an exciting new world of possibilities for gaming, and I've been particularly enamoured with Windows Phone 7 thanks to its integration with Xbox Live, and the minimum specifications Microsoft had for the handsets meaning that all of them are capable gaming devices. Also, because the OS is just so damned sexy. When I'm not playing or reviewing games, I have a variety of other interests and hobbies, not least ancient literature and history, subjects in which I hold both a bachelor and master of arts; so if you've any questions about which of the ancient Greek novels is the best,* you know who to ask! *Lucian's True History
