Time for more wall climbing, wall jumping, people stabbing, sword clashing action as Altair quietly wonders onto Windows Phone before shoving a concealed knife into it. Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles follows the tale of Altair (big surprise) except it does feel like a bit of filler between two bigger stories, the end simply stops. It does have a sense of building up to something, and then it just stops. That aside, you can still have plenty of fun along the way.
The game doesn’t give you as much freedom as you could get from the AC games you find on the Xbox or PS3, but it does still give you a little bit of freedom whilst trying to guide you down a particular path. By this I mean, there are 3D environments you can wonder around, but you have to end up at a particular place & there’s only really one way you can normally get to that place.
Graphics wise, it’s a lot better than some 3D mobile games I’ve seen, but it’s not going to blow you away. One thing I did notice though is the nice differentiation between different towns. There are about 6 different towns & you seem to end up in different areas of each town. My favourite places are the sewers though, going through the maze-like tunnels is quite fun.
When it comes to fighting other people, it does become a little bit ‘button mashy’. You have 3 buttons to fight with; fast attack, heavy attack, block. There are combos you can do with these, but they aren’t overly inventive. Other little tricks you can perform are pickpocketing (which involves dragging things around a virtual pocket) & forcing someone into talking (which you do by pressing specific pressure points at the right times).
To sum up, the controls are quite simple, but the game is still fun to play. I found myself playing it quite a lot to try to reach the end, which took some time thanks to the large range of levels.
