The Fall of Gods is a game, where you control a boy on a heroic quest. That is, assuming that you get past the game’s propensity to crash, freeze up, stop responding to input or otherwise fail, forcing you to restart.
Sometimes these errors come during a moment of non-interactive animation. Sometimes they come after one. Sometimes they occur when you have the temerity to bring up a menu option. One thing’s for certain: they will occur, and they will do so sooner rather than later. Stop-start doesn’t begin to cover it.
What little game that there is to be experienced between the game’s stutters and collapses is somewhat uninspired – an action RPG with a finesse-free combat system, dotted with awkwardly written prose telling a rudimentary story. The graphics are nice enough, in a 16-bit kind of way, though the game accidentally demonstrates just why it was that top-down RPGs tended not to allow characters to wander behind objects and/or made sure no objects were taller than the player, as being attacked by enemies obscured by trees in the foreground gets old quickly.
But, by and large, all that is moot. This game, quite simply, does not work. Its constant crashes make it unplayable, and the fact that the developer is already charging for the game is absolutely shocking, even if the price they’re asking is only 79p. Even looking past that, the control system is absolutely unsuited to touchscreen play, using a cursor-based scheme which often requires levels of precision simply impossible on a phone, not to mention menus controlled, inexplicably, by using swipes to scroll up and down through them. So not only does the game not work properly on Windows Phone 7, when it does work the controls do their best to conspire against the player.
If they do fix the game then it might be worth considering, even with its limited interface and wooden narrative, but in its current state I have to recommend that players stay far, far away.
