The game is by MiniClip and is quite a nice title in terms of production value and gameplay. The in game tutorial does the basics but fails to answer things like what is a bulls-eye and perfect landing and I think they could have done it better. After a couple of rounds you will automatically pick up those things by yourself so I am not going to hold the lack of info in the tutorial against the game. Being an xBox live title you have got all the usual leader board, achievements , etc

The game has a in app purchase system where you can buy coins which in turn can be used to buy upgrades and new characters. I know many of our readers are not big fans of the in app purchase model ( I too hate those games where you have to wait x hrs for your energy to replenish unless you make in app purchase to get past that time block ) but I think the devs have implemented it rather tastefully. You can play the game when ever you want and earn game coins when you play. You still have to grind hard to earn those coins.

PS : I called the game Gravity Run 2 ( I blame that on Temple Run ;) ) in the video .. my bad its Gravity Guy 2. In regards to the different characters I am not sure if they offer any special ability that alter the game play .. those things are bloody expensive to purchase.

Gravity Guy 2 is an endless side scroller / platformer where there are multiple platforms and you have to jump your way across them and keep going as long as you can. To keep things challenging you have various obstacles in the form of orbs and laser fields along the way. You have access to abilities jump, double jump and lifts to help you on your journey. You will also notice that the coins go from bronze, silver and to gold as you keep going and performing things like bulls-eye and perfect landing gets you extra coins.

I did see some occasional issues while playing : one was the game does lag at times , which can be really annoying if you are chasing a high score. For some reason jumping or double jumping over the laser field will kill you ( even when you don’t in any way touch the laser .. use the lift to boost you up and you should be ok ). Those issues aside the game is fun to play and is something you should check out if you are in to casual games.

When you launch the game you can check out the various objectives the games asks you to complete, things like getting 5000 coins to scoring 10 million points are all in there. These are kinda like achievements that you might see in xbox live games, obviously with out the gamerscore element to it. There is a stats section where you can see how you have performed in the game split by single run and lifetime. The store lets you upgrade various abilities and powerups, you can also buys various other characters that you can use in the game. The powerups comes as passive and active abilities some things like Double Value coins after 1000m automatically kicks in, you get to pick up colored coins for more points after 1000m ( duh ). While some of the other powerups like the magnet , invisibility, etc comes up in your path and you have to jump to pick it up the effects of these powerups only last a limited time some make them count. The options screen provides some basic options you can see in any games , you can toggle the tutorial on or off from here. The sensitivity in there is related to the accelerometer sensitivity and NOT swipe sensitivity ( we have a lot more to talk about the swipe sensitivity, we will get to that in a bit ). If you like to take shortcuts and buy your way out of things there is a More Coin option for all your in app purchase needs.

So let us get in to the game and see how it performs , clicking on the idol from the main menu will make the adventurer take the idol and then you start the mad dash to the exit avoiding obstacles and collecting coins on the way , while the mutated ape guardians give chase. There is a vertical meter to the left that fills up as you collect coins and it adds to your multiplier score and the top right shows you the current score and coins collected. Collecting coins gives you cash that you spend in the store to unlock various goodies. The controls are quite easy to pick up .. your character will run on his own , perhaps even faster than Forrest. You can issue a swipe up command to jump this can be used to jump over broken bridges and what not , then you have the slide ( swipe down ) which can be handy if you don’t want to get bbq’ed on the flame arch or go face first in to the tree roots that has crept up all over the place. You will also have to turn left or right which is done by swiping in the desired direction and finally you can use the accelerometer for strafing and collecting coins. That is all there is to the controls.

In the game your goal is to stay alive as long as possible and collect as many coins as you can. There are many ways in which you can die in this game falling of the path in to the river, smashing in to a wall, etc which are all instant kills . If you stumble up on a root the guardians chasing you will come up right behind you on the screen and when they are there and you stumble once more you are a dead man.

When the game was initially released everyone was playing it and it was fun competing against your mates and when you have a good score you get bragging rights till someone else beats your score, but that craze has passed along and not a lot of people play Temple Run these days that said the game is still very enjoyable when it works properly. On my lumia 920 the game seems to have a weird issue of not registering the swipe left and swipe right command, it works fine most of the time but then when it fails to work you don’t turn and fall straight in to the waiting mouth of a hungry crocodile and thus ending your hopes for getting that high score and this can be really frustrating. From the looks of it ( reading through the rating the game received ) I am not the only one with this issue and perhaps its only limited to Lumia devices. I would love to know if our readers on other devices faces the same issue, if you do please drop a comment below.

When you fire up Archer you got all the usual setting like toggle sound and vibration , a how to section which runs you through the game mechanics using a series of images, a leaderboard that gives you the local and online results which is powered by Scoreloop. When you hit on play you are presented with 3 gameplay modes

Singleplayer : If you are like me this is probably where most of you will spend your time. A straight up time trail mode where you get 20 seconds to take as many shots as you can and the idea is to rake in as many point as you can. Each time you get a bullseye you get an additional 2 second time bonus. The controls are pretty straight fwd, click and drag the arrow to pull and as soon as you begin your hand will begin to wobble . Now you got to take the wind in to consideration line up the shot by moving your finger and when you take your finder off the screen the archer releases the arrow. After a few tries you should find the best spot on the screen where you would want to click and drag. To keep the game interesting you will notice that the target will also move in some rounds. Once the time is up the calculates your score, the scores are calculated based on where you land your arrow , closer to the center gives you more points.

VS : Same as single player but with 2 players, unfortunately it’s not a multiplayer game but just 2 player on the same device.

Training : This is the practice area where there is no countdown timer, so you can go in here to practice and improve your archery skills.

To sum it up , its one of those average casual game that can be fun at times, for a price of $0.00 you can try it out for yourself and decide.

Second Chance Gameplay

The presentation was very spartan in nature, the sound and graphics was not that great but something about these quick 5 session round was quite appealing to me and I found it rather enjoyable. You start the game and you get five lives and then you see a small device on the screen that will tell you what mode of game it is , depending on that you swipe or tap the scree or tilt the device to complete the level. The first few time you play you will take you time to figure out what is it that you exactly need to do in each of these levels but once you get the idea you can easy complete most levels.

To keep things interesting the game increases the speed after a few level and then throws you a boss level , if you complete that level you get one extra life. Once you run out of life the game is over and you can enter you score on to the leaderboard. That pretty much sums up the game, definitely worth a look if you are in to casual games.

ThinkInvisible Gameplay Video

When you launch the game you see a short intro to the game followed by the level selector screen , there are 9 levels in total I did not feel any sense of increasing difficulty as they progress. Each level offers 9 different puzzle for you to unlock. The puzzles only show up a small portion of the image ( which can be a logo or picture of a famous landmark or person ) and the number of characters in the word, with this info you have to guess the item. When you click on the picture a a small portion of the fog of war is cleared and you can see a bit more of the image , you get one more chance and another spot is revealed. The next 2 clicks will reveal the first and last alphabets in the word. If you still have no clue as to what the item is you are given the option to share it on facebook and twitter so your mates could help you out. If all else fails you can you can ask the app to reveal the answer to you ( you only have a limited amount of these, so use them wisely ). If all else fails just ask me and I will post the answers here.

The games has some nice audio clips when you successfully identify and answer a puzzle but some of them have a horrible static background noise to it which can be annoying, I wish they would tidy up the audio a bit so the experience remains pleasurable. Currently there is only a limited number of puzzle to solve in there but the devs have promised to add more to it soon , hopefully they deliver on it. The game seems to be completely free on Windows Phone unlike on the android where its a freemium title where 2 levels are free and then you have to purchase the other levels.

The game is not with out faults.. at times you will find that clicking on the field to add your answer might unlock a clue.. and the fact that the answer input screen does not show you the number of characters in the word, etc .. hopefully the devs takes notice of these and push out an update to fix them. To sum it up if you enjoy the Logos Quiz genre games then don’t miss this one, its free and the presentation of the game is quite nice.

The Path of Kara Windows Phone

When you launch the game you can instantly tell the game developers Anshar Studios have put a lot of love in to the project. The narrative part of it is text driven and with some animation thrown in to it, that along with the amazing background music will take you on a good story driven puzzle adventure. The game play is quite simple if 3 or more similar items are together you trace your finger across them and they pop giving you points. In some of the levels you can pop 6 or more items in one go to unlock special items like the time portion or a bomb which can help you clear items next to it.

The game offer 72 levels over 7 quest with varying terrains you start off in the village collecting fruits and supplies for your journey then you go into a forest to find runes, through a cave to kill a big bad spider , fire cannons to defeat a kraken, stack up a ladder, solve puzzles by breaking rocks and locks and so on. The game changes the background and the objects you have to match according to these levels which is a nice touch. The animated backgrounds in the levels adds to the story telling experience. The controls are quite responsive and works well.

JumpWheel Windows Phone Game

JumpWheel for Windows Phone puts you in control of a wheel that jumps.. duh !!. You have to travel through an obstacle course when the wheel keeps pushing forward and you can only make it jump , double jump or sink. There are 2 buttons one on the left to sink ( when you are in the air if you click on it you make a swift decent ) and the one on the right to jump , tap it twice to double jump ( say hi if double jump reminded you of Unreal Tournament ^_^ ). Each time you do a sink or double jump you expend energy and you can only perform these 2 moves if you have enough energy , that is where the colored wheels come in : yup there are three different wheels each with its own ability. The green one is the balanced wheel that requires equal energy for double jump and sink, orange is better for double jump and blue is better for sink move.

The game does have a text based tutorial that should get you up to speed with the rules and features of the game and the settings screen has all the usual suspects in there. I played the game on high resolution and noticed no lags on my aging Omnia7. The graphics and music in the game is quite good.

Like all mobile games the levels ( all but 2 of them ) gives you 3 star to unlock based on your performance. The more bonus point power-ups you pick up the better your chances are to get 3 stars. The 2 levels with out stars are boss levels , yup you get to take down 2 evil boss thingis with your jumping-wheel. Unlike the other levels where you have to avoid obstacles , pick the green, blue or orange orbs ( based on your wheel color ) , bonus point pickups and avoid the red orbs , you damage the boss by picking up white orbs.

Some issues I have with the game is that it would a good idea to show the layout of the level to the player before the round begins that way they are not flying blind and perhaps adding difficulty settings in there so that in easy levels the player can get a save point mid way through the game where they can restart from.

The game offers 2 modes of game play the standard free play mode and the time restricted time trial, as the name suggest the free play mode has no time constraints but in time trial you have to complete as many puzzles as you can within the given time ranging from 30 seconds,1 ,2 and 4 minutes. You can adjust the difficulty by picking a board size of 5×5 all the way to 9×9 boards. In free play you can choose between freeplay and bonus pack each of them offering 150 puzzles.

The game play is quite easy to master, touch and and drag your finger from one dot to the other and if you connect 2 identical colored dots you will hear the “ploop” sound. You can touch on the line to break the flow to take a different path, or touch on the dots to remove the flow completely. Sadly the game does not offer a way to undo your moves , but you can always restart the game. You are able to pick any random level and play it, which is great for those to want to skip the easy levels and jump in to the 9×9 board straight away. One other issue you might find is that the game has no hints, so if you are stuck you are stuck. But if you ask nicely I will post the screenshot of the answers to the levels you want. .

On to issues or things that could be improved : there could be a leaderboard to see how you perform against the other Flow free players and perhaps a way to save your game data so when you get a new phone you dont have to start over from 5×5 boards.

The game is also available on Windows 8 sadly there is no syncing of data between the 2 version, but that is no biggie as long as you can skip and go to the level you want. Over all I am impressed and will easily recommend this game to anyone who wants to have a casual puzzle game.

For the price of free the game offers some amazing value with 2400 levels !!! , split across 4 difficulty easy , normal , hard and crazy. That gives us 600 puzzles on each of those difficulty. Sadly I was not able to test out if crazy is in fact crazy hard because you have to complete the game in sequence to get through each level and difficulty. I was not a big fan of that, if I want to play the crazy difficulty , let me do it .. I might not want to sit through the easy levels to play what I want.

The game offers a simple tutorial , with pretty pictures that should be a breeze to follow for anyone. The idea of the game is to use minimum number of moves to get the red car out of the parking lot. You can click and drag the cars to move them and the cars will only move either horizontally or vertically ( If I recall correctly the tutorial got horizontally and vertically mixed up .. or perhaps it was just the way I looked at it ). The game offers you a hint button which will show you a screenshot of how the cleared path looks like and should help you complete the level ( unfortunately there is no skip levels button if you are completely stuck ). The sound FX are pretty decent and the music is nothing great that will make you want to have it on all the time.

It’s one of that casual game that any puzzle game lovers on windows phone will come to love and with the asking price of FREE and huge content to play through , this little game even with some little annoying things here and there is definitely worth the download. Similar Car Unblock games are also available on Android if you want to give that a go.

Gun Bros

The first few games Glu published for Windows Phone 7 were all purchases you would pay for upfront – there were a couple back in 2010, around launch, and a few more across last year. This year, their three titles have all adopted Xbox Live and the ‘freemium’ model. They seem quite busy over in the iOS and Android camps, so have clearly decided this is the way to go. Their first freemium title this year was Bug Village, aptly named not just for the gameplay but for the way the game played – that is, it was bugged. There were reports of achievements glitching amongst other things. Last week they released Contract Killer, too – more on that later. This review focuses on Gun Bros, a title they released at the end of May but which I only visited now around the time of Contract Killer’s launch and the chatter it brought with it – mixed, to say the least.

First off, free Xbox Live games are great – a cheap way to get an extra 200G! Well, not quite – at least not if Glu has their way. Sure, it is possible to complete the game and unlock all the achievements without having to spend a penny. That goes without saying – everyone knows that. Certainly the people behind Monster Island now do. Back to Gun Bros – yes, it is possible, but that does not mean Glu are going to make it easy. They have very purposely made it so that it is going to take a substantial number of hours of gameplay to get anywhere near completion if going down the free route; this can, of course, be substantially reduced if you are willing to make a few in-app purchases.

Then again, that is not necessarily all that bad. I mean, longevity in a game is a sought-after quality. Glu has certainly published a game that will keep you going for many an hour if you want level 100 and to quash all 10 revolutions on any planet (both of which are achievements worthy of an… achievement). However, it does become incredibly difficult, especially as all of the better guns have to be bought using War Bucks, a sort of premium in-game currency. The only way to get war Bucks normally is as rewards, such as for daily and successive log-ins; after logging in for five days straight, I have collected six War Bucks. The most expensive gun? That costs 3,499 War Bucks, which is well beyond anything I could amass, ever. What if I were to cop out and purchase that gun? 1600MSP will buy you 72 War Bucks – that prices this gun at about 77,756MSP! I do not know exactly how much MSP costs in USD or AUD, but at least in pounds sterling (GBP) that prices this gun at some £780! Why anyone would buy that – and therefore why it is even included – is beyond me, unless there is some opportunist at Glu hoping someone is not going to do their maths right and purchase the gun, mistaking the price point for something much lower. Anyway, it is not as if this gun is vital to completion, so aside from noting it as bizarre I will not be considering it later.

However, the point remains that whilst the game is free to download (and a sizeable download at 190MB) Glu has done everything they can to tempt you away from playing for free. The game itself is not actually that bad, but it is testimony to the issues surrounding the gameplay that I am still leaving that aspect of the review for later.

Andrew Bares raised an interesting point over at WMPowerUser.com in his review of Contract Killer, which applies here too. He refers to Microsoft’s Technical Certification Requirements, which is a document laying out all criteria an application must pass for it to be allowed onto the Marketplace. He highlights two points, with the first being unexpected crashes – although I have not experienced that with Gun Bros. The second point is the phrase within Microsoft’s document that “within 20 seconds after launch, the application must be responsive to user input.” This is a fairly fundamental point as failure to adhere has both an adverse effect on the user’s experience of the app, but also on the perception of the Marketplace and the quality of apps therein.

My experience of the app as regards startup has been fairly mixed; one thing it has not been, though, is fast. Starting the game from the Games Hub (or start screen) it tries to connect to Xbox Live; I am certain this is in excess of a minute, very possibly more. More often than not, this will fail and it will load up a page saying “play Gun Bros every day for rewards,” from which I can retry connecting to Xbox Live. This takes a further minute or so, after which it seems to succeed but the game does not register it, but hitting retry again will usually trip it into realising it is actually connecting. Several minutes have passed before I can even really do anything. Sure, it is far quicker to start if you disable WiFi and stop it from even attempting to connect to Xbox Live, but really you will want to as offline gameplay is missing several features. Offline is not unplayable by any means, but it is far easier to amass coin with the extra refineries only available when connected to Live (more on these later). This is definitely nowhere near the 20 second start-up that Microsoft requires, and Glu should be forced to update. The title first appeared on iOS sometime in 2010 – surely this should not even be an issue.

I think I have covered all the surrounding issues, so now it is finally time for the actual gameplay to be reviewed. As mentioned, the gameplay is not actually too bad and there is enough of it to keep going strong for many hours. The premise is that a two man organisation, FRAGGED (Freakishly Rugged Advanced Genetics Galactic Enforcement Division), is trying to quell a series of invasions or revolutions by the TOOL (Tyrannical Oppressors of Life). Brothers Percy and Francis Gun are the only men in this Division and the game is a sort of co-op shooter where they try to stop a couple hundred invaders per level, using some oversized weapons. You pick one of them to play as (there is not much difference between the two, except that in their pictures one is smoking a cigar) and the AI controls the other (for the time being) as you try to stop dead waves of attackers.

The character is controlled using two analogue sticks; the left one controls movement, whilst the right one dictates the direction he is facing as he shoots. The controls are easy and work well, although I have had issues with the sticks being static. In trying to move quickly away from being cornered, I have slightly missed the stick (or moved my thumb too far away from its centre) and suddenly my character stops in his tracks. As a comparison, I still occasionally play PES 2012 (the football/soccer game) where the stick sets its centre at wherever I place my left thumb, meaning I never have the issue of unregistered movement and losing out because of it.

The enemies, the TOOL, seem only to have the intention of overwhelming you and your brother so prepared to be surrounded by them – and often. They do not exactly play to their strengths and just try to get as close to you as possible before shooting (or hacking and slicing, as in some cases, which in fairness actually demands proximity to the target). There is also plenty of variation between enemies, ranging from the very small who can only attack by slicing from nearby and who are killed with a single shot from pretty much anything to far bigger boss-like monsters.

There is also a large variety to be found in the armoury. There are several categories of guns, including pistols, shotguns, rifles, spreads, lasers, heavy and the ambiguously-named ‘special.’ For each of the first four, killing 1,000 enemies (or, as Glu puts it, “servicing” 1,000 enemies) with each gun type is worth its own achievement (that is, one achievement for 1,000 pistol kills, another for 1,000 shotgun kills and so on). Each gun type feels different, and there are a number in each category. Unfortunately, if you plan to play through Gun Bros for free, many will be out of reach as they demand payment in War Bucks which are hard to come by. Nevertheless, there is still a decent selection to pick from and if you plan to get achievements Omega (15G; quell all 10 revolutions on a planet) or Legend (30G; reach level 100), chances are you will get to experience most of them.

I have mentioned that there are 10 revolutions per planet. I do not actually know how many planets there are because some remain as big question marks (there are seven such question marks, but I cannot guarantee they all follow the same pattern), remaining locked, but I can see at least three each with its own 10 revolutions. Each revolution, in turn, consists of 50 waves. Generally, the first 20-30 waves can be done in one fell swoop, but the remaining lot tend to be more of a gruelling slog, picking off a maximum of five at a time until the very latter levels which involve plenty of deaths before any sort of completion of even one wave. There is also one planet, called Bokor, which differs from the others in that on this planet there is a zombie invasion. Here the aim is to clear ten hordes of zombies, each consisting of 100 zombies. Kill 1,000 zombies and it is complete. In practice it is far harder as in the later levels the 100 zombies tend to decide to turn up all at once and getting out of there is not that easy. There are many hours to be spent – or wasted – here.

I mentioned earlier that the AI will take the role of your bro. This is always the case, but in offline mode or without any friends in your contact list the other bro will just be randomly-generated with some alright-but-not-great weaponry. Whilst it is not quite online gameplay, if you happen to have a few Live friends who have also played Gun Bros they can act as your Bro on your phone, and their character will appear alongside you complete with all his gear. I had one friend at level 47 when I was just starting out. I am pretty sure that helped out significantly, as the gun his character was toting was far bigger and more menacing than the basic pistol and rifle my fledgling character had been equipped with.

As you are scouring the planets of any TOOL, your character collects an ore called Xplodium. Upon his death (that is, the current crusade abruptly ends) the Xplodium and experience is detailed and awarded. This Xplodium is then put into one of the many refineries. The very basic one offers an instant payout of as much coin as you put in Xplodium. Doing this will unlock the next one, which after a ten minute wait will offer about 120% as much coin as you put in Xplodium. Doing this repeatedly will eventually the sixth refinery; after 72 hours your return in coin is 400% of what you put in. Of course, by paying War Bucks you can unlock better refineries with shorter waiting times and bigger pay-outs. Also, with more friends playing Gun Bros your own rewards from the standard refineries increase (for instance, the game tells me I have five friends playing Gun Bros (form whom I can pick any one to accompany me into battle as a Bro) and this entitles me to a 30% bonus in the refineries’ pay-outs). In offline mode, however, only the instant refinery and, I believe, the premium refineries are available.

Those of you who caught the mini review of this by this site’s editor-in-chief Saijo George will have seen he found the buttons in the menu to be a bit on the small, but I personally did not have much issue with them. They are not exactly metro style over-sized buttons and I could lay my thumb flat and expect it to know where I meant to press, but using the ends of my thumbs I had no real issue and the game seemed to register the same thing I intended most of the time (there were a couple of mishaps where it completely missed me pressing, but only on the odd occasion).

The game also has a store – naturally. Here you can pay coin or War Bucks (whichever the game dictates, it does not seemingly permit choosing between the two payment methods) for various guns, pieces of armour or power-ups. The guns I have mentioned before. The pieces of armour are articles of clothing or hair-dos which affect the character’s stats, such as attack, defence and speed and can be a quick way to make him that bit tougher if your next desired gun is still a bit above you in terms of cost. Power-ups is a bit of an erroneous term, but largely encompasses miscellany such as health packs and grenades (freeze, frag, stun and so on). Naturally, some of the better stuff will demand War Bucks, but plenty of things are available for coin – although expect income to be a bit erratic as you put your truly massive winnings into the three-day refinery and small earnings in the ten-minute or instant variety.

All things considered, there are a number of issues with the game. The start time is excessive. I have even had issues exiting, and had to resort to utilising the limitations on number of apps I can have open in order to close it. However, once it is up and running, the game can be quite fun. I have myself spent several hours already on it. I do not plan to spend a whole load more, but I want to see if I can get a few more achievements before I am ready to pack it in. Its longevity means it can be a pick-up-and-play title. You can open any wave in any revolution (that you have previously played or unlocked) on a planet and just mindlessly shoot some TOOL to kill a few minutes (although opening the app might kill all the minutes you have to kill in the first place). It is a free title and there is no harm in giving it a try. If the problems in starting it put you off, you never have to revisit it again; but if the gameplay can hold you just enough engaged that the issues almost seem worth it, then it can be a good game to have.
