Break MORE Aliens!: Space Invaders Meets Pong

Break MORE Aliens! (as the name is stylised) is a game in which the player has to stop an alien invasion. In Space Invaders style, the alien army is advancing down the screen and it is the player’s job to stop them. That sounds easy enough.
In the classic Space Invaders, the task of shooting down aliens is undertaken by shooting new bullets upwards, manoeuvring your own ship along the bottom of the screen. In Break MORE Aliens!, the goal is achieved with just the one ball and a paddle. The paddle is moved along the bottom of screen – using your finger – to keep the ball in play. This ball then wreaks havoc with the advancing aliens and stops them in their tracks, well before total annihilation of the planet – or so the theory goes.
Powerups add a different dimension to the game. They can make the ball travel faster, increase paddle size or provide an extra life, for instance. These are activated when ‘caught’ – that is, touched by the paddle, in much the same way as the ball is put back into play and made to quell the invasion. There are both standard modes as well as ‘survival,’ and the game also has the option to turn all powerups off – “supermode.”
As a game in general, I feel this game might just be a three out of five, and that is what I have given it in this review, but when narrowing the category down to games of this nature – that is, space invaders-style games – this game could be a four. What I am trying to say is that this game does not perhaps stand out amongst other general games, but if you are looking for this type of game you could do worse than look at Break MORE Aliens! and its retro look and feel with a modern twist. Breakrusher is a similar game I reviewed a while back – each, of course, has its own take on, and its own approach to, a similar style of game.
Breakrusher is all about breaking boxes on screen whilst Break MORE Aliens! is tasking the player with stopping the alien advancement towards the Windows logo (that is, the bottom of the screen). If you feel so inclined, both are priced reasonably at 99 cents – rather inexpensive, a hallmark of mobile pick-up-and-play games, but then with the rather aggressive price cuts undertaken by Microsoft and games developers, 99 cents will nowadays buy Xbox Live titles for Windows Phone.
The game is good fun and its simple gameplay and retro looks will be sure to instill some nostalgia and provide some momentary relief from the stress of daily life. As is a staple of our Marketplace, there is a trial of the game available for download so you can make your own mind up.
